ESSENTIAL DO’S & DON’TS OF HYPER-PIGMENTATION

   DO’s

  • DO WEAR SUNSCREEN RELIGIOUSLY. Sunscreen is your first and most important line of defense for hyper-pigmentation. Sunscreen can help reduce your risk of developing hyper-pigmentation, and stop existing dark spots from getting darker. UV rays stimulate melanocytes (colour- making cells in the skin); which tends to worsen the condition in hyper-pigmentation. Always use a good quality broad spectrum sunscreen. Also remember to reapply the sunscreen every 2-3 hours.
  • DO LIMIT THE TIME YOU SPEND UNDER DIRECT SUN. Also wear protective clothing because most of the lightening formulations make your skin overly photo/sun-sensitive.
  • DO ALWAYS CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST FOR THE TREATMENT.
  • DO STICK TO THE SKIN CARE REGIME DEVISED BY YOUR DERMATOLOGIST. Consistency is key when applying hyper-pigmentation medications; so don’t go to bed without dousing yourself in the creams your dermatologist recommends. Don’t expect to see results within a week or two. Skin lightening in an ongoing process, not an overnight transformation.
  • DO ALWAYS INVEST IN/ USE SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT CATER TO YOUR UNIQUE SKINCARE CONCERNS.
  • DO CHOOSE SKINCARE PRODUCTS WISELY. Choose gentle skin care products. Select formulas that don’t sting or burn, as products that irritate the skin can worsen the condition. Look for words such as fragrance-free, sulphate free and hypoallergenic on the labels. Avoid products containing menthol and synthetic colorants’. (It is always advisable to take professional guidance in selecting skincare products for your skin.)
  • DO TRY TO KEEP YOUR SKIN COOL AS HEAT TRIGGERS HYPER-PIGMENTATION.

DON’Ts

  • DON’T RUB YOUR FACE. Your skin needs a gentle touch so blot/ pat your face dry using a soft towel.
  • DON’T PICK, POP, SQUEEZE OR MESS WITH YOUR SKIN IT CAN FURTHER WORSEN YOUR SITUATION.
DON’T HANG OUT IN THE SAUNA OR HOT TUB. Studies show that heat triggers the production of melanocytes.
  • DON’T OVER USE CHEMICAL EXFOLIANTS LIKE ACIDS, ENZYMES AND RETINOIDS.
  • DON’T SIT IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER FOR LONG PERIODS AS THE UV RAYS COMING OUT OF THE COMPUTER/LAPTOP MONITOR CAN TRIGGER YOUR HYPER-PIGMENTATION. If your job requires you to stare at a computer screen all day, make sure you take breaks frequently, even if you just get up to have a cup of coffee and wear a broad spectrum sunscreen.
DON’T WAX OR BLEACH AREAS OF YOUR FACE AFFECTED BY HYPER-PIGMENTATION. Waxing may cause skin inflammation which in turn can aggravate hyper-pigmentation.
  • DON’T USE TOO MANY SKINCARE PRODUCTS. KEEP YOUR SKINCARE REGIME SPECIFIC YET SIMPLE.
  • DON’T USE EXPIRED OR VERY OLD SKINCARE PRODUCTS.
