Lactic acid present in buttermilk is very good for brown pigmentation spots. Dip cotton wool/ cloth in butter milk and cleanse your face/affected area. Keep it on for 5-10 mins before washing off with lukewarm water. You can also additionally add 2-3 strands of saffron to this. Mix this in buttermilk and let it stay for 1 hour; then stir it with a spoon and now it can be used for cleansing. Saffron helps in lightening the skin spots/ hyper-pigmentation and helps in improving the quality of skin.
The enzyme papain in papaya is used for skin exfoliation, regeneration of new skin cells and hence removal of pigmented layer on the skin. Cut a piece of papaya and rub it all over your face/affected area. Keep it on the skin for next 5-10 mins before washing off with lukewarm water.
The base (main ingredient in which other components are mixed) of your face pack should be chosen according to your skin type. The key ingredients (described henceforth in this section) that help in combating hyper-pigmentation should be added with or in the below mentioned face pack base.
Raw potato works very well to help lighten hyper-pigmented skin as well as other spots and blemishes on the skin. Potatoes contain catecholase, an enzyme that is believed to help lighten skin tone. Preparation & Application: Peel a potato and cut it into thick slices. Put a few drops of water on the surface of a potato piece and then rub it on your skin for five to 10 minutes. Then rinse it off with lukewarm water. OR Grate one medium-size potato and squeeze the juice out of it. Add an equal amount of lemon juice to it and mix well. Apply the solution on the pigmented area and leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes before washing it off.
Licorice extract contains Glabridin in trace amounts. This component is the one with a skin-lightening effect. Glabridin has been proven to be quite effective in stopping the process that leads to the formation of dark skin spots. Despite its potency it is not harmful to regular skin cells. Aside from its Glabridin content, licorice extract is also an anti-inflammatory agent. Preparation & Application: mix chopped cucumbers and licorice powder. Blend it all together, and a homemade face pack is ready for you to use. Be careful, this pack/ mask/ paste should only be applied on affected areas.
Yogurt helps you to lighten brown spots in a natural way. Apply yogurt directly on the brown spots and then wash it off after 20 minutes. For instant results yogurt should be applied on the face before sleeping and washed in the morning. It can also be added in face packs.
Avocados are rich in fatty acids, vitamin C and oleic acid. These help in cell renewal and hence in hyper-pigmentation. These can be added in any face pack. Apply a mashed avocado directly on the affected area and then wash it off after 20 minutes.
Vitamin E being an antioxidant, vitamin E neutralizes the effects of harmful UV rays of the sun and repairs and protects the skin. Preparation & Application: Puncture one vitamin E capsule and put the contents in a bowl. Add three or four drops of castor oil to it and mix well. Apply the mixture on the affected skin before going to bed. Rinse it off the next morning.
You can make a homemade mask with one-half cup of Fuller’s earth, one tablespoon of blended papaya and the contents of two vitamin E capsules. Mix the ingredients together to form a thick paste. Apply the mixture evenly on the affected area, leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. Repeat this regularly, once a week.
You can also massage vitamin E oil into the affected skin for 5 minutes twice daily to reduce hyper-pigmentation.
Tomato acts as natural bleach. Yogurt also works as natural bleach and has skin tightening properties. Oatmeal works as a natural smoothening agent. Preparation & Application: Squeeze out tomato juice and add 2 tsp. of oatmeal, 1 tsp. Of sandalwood powder and 1/2 tsp. of yogurt. Apply this mixture gently on the pigmented skin areas and let it sit for 20 minutes to dry and then wash it off.
For dry skin use cucumber juice instead of tomato or lemon juice.
The high protein content in almonds has the capacity to lighten skin complexion. Almonds also contain vitamin E that not only corrects skin discoloration but also nourishes the skin. Almond paste is one of the oldest natural remedy to cure hyper-pigmentation. You can achieve some remarkable results within just a couple of weeks.The best thing about almond is that it has a mild bleaching effect that is completely natural and does not carry any side effects. Preparation & Application: Soak almonds overnight in raw milk. In the morning add a pinch of saffron to it and then grind it into a paste. Apply this paste for about 1 hour. Then wash off with lukewarm water. Results are visible within a month of using this regularly.
Mint is a cooling agent and it has immense soothing and skin curing properties. The mint content in fresh mint leaves helps to reduce and lighten pigmentation and brown spots on the skin. Grind a few mint leaves and mix it with water to form a paste. To lessen dark pigmentation, apply the paste on the melanin spots and rinse it off after 15 minutes.
For getting rid of pigmentation, moong dal and orange peel can be the most effective combination. Moong dal or green gram can provide significant amounts of vitamin B1, B5, B9 and B6 that can increase blood circulation in your skin. Vitamin B also serves as an effective skin-lightening agent that can reduce pigmentation on your skin. Orange peel contains citric acid that soothes and softens the skin. Preparation & Application: To 2 tablespoons of moong dal, add a little water and allow the dal to soak overnight. Grind it to a paste in the morning. Dry some orange peel and grind it to a powder. Combine moong dal paste with the orange peel powder and add 2 teaspoons of honey to it. Slowly add milk to the mixture to form a smooth paste. Apply this paste on your face and leave it to dry for 15-20 minutes. Then gently rinse off with some warm water.
Onion is a natural bleaching agent and helps to reduce the dark spots. Honey helps to moisten the skin naturally. Preparation & Application: Extract 3 table spoon of onion juice. Add ½ table spoon of honey to it. Apply this mixture on your dark spots and wait for 20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water.
