Vampire Face lift: Touted as the new elixir for facial rejuvenation

medspa-ibiza-vampire-facialVampire face lift has become the latest rage to take the aesthetic industry by storm. Having garnered a lot of media attention because of its popularity with celebrity endorsers like US reality star Kim Kardashian, Indian bollywood actresses and last but not the least due to its sensational name.

It has found myriad enthusiasts in India too and people are flocking to clinics for getting this procedure done.

Therefore we have penned down this article to help our clients/ website visitors; understand the basics and get a clearer perspective about this procedure. Also we want our clients/ website visitors to be well informed so that they can prevent themselves from falling prey to fake skin advocators and advisers who lure people in order to extract money in the name of skincare.

It is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure involving the re-injection of a platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM)—derived from the patient’s own blood; back into strategic areas of the skin; to induce growth factors and encourage skin renewal; creating a more youthful, plumper & rejuvenated firmer appearing skin.

Well before we head towards understanding what this procedure all about; we must know what is PRP (platelet rich plasma)GetImage

Our blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma) but it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets).

Platelets are tiny blood cells that are important in the clotting process. As the clot is formed, the granules present inside the platelets release clotting and growth factors. These growth factors promote healing and play a key role in tissue regeneration by attracting stem cells to aid in the repair of a damaged area.

Blood typically contains 6% platelets; whereas PRP is plasma with significantly increased platelet concentration and hence the concentration of growth factors is 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

Step 1 – Patient evaluation and identification of the areas to be targeted

The cosmetic surgeon/ cosmetologist first check the medical history of the patient. Then the cosmetic surgeon evaluates the extent to which a patient will benefit from this face lift. The surgeon needs to do a lot of study and evaluation for each facelift procedure so that un-natural shape is not created. The goals and expectations are discussed with the patient.

This is followed by a strategic analysis to identify the specific areas or spots to be injected/ targeted.

Step 2- Preparationimages

The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed. The cosmetic surgeon marks the spots/ areas on the face that need to be injected with a special pencil.

If required or requested, the surgeon will apply a topical numbing cream to the patient’s face to make them feel comfortable during the treatment.

Step 3- Drawing blood from the armarticle-0-0BCDF06E000005DC-235_468x494

The cosmetologist then takes out blood from your arm, in the same way like you give blood for any regular blood test.

Step4- Isolating PRPhuman-body-overview-54-638

The drawn blood is placed in a centrifuge for 5 to 10 minutes. This equipment spins the blood at high speed to separate plasma and different components (red cells, white cells, and platelets) of the blood.

Step 5- OPTIONAL STEP (Depending upon the intensity of wrinkles and the extent of sagging; the cosmetologist adds or removes this step)

Injecting hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane or Juvaderm; lift the skin away from the bone to restore youthful volume and shape. PRP’s attach to filler to stimulate collagen production and provide better volume results. PRP’s also make traditional fillers last longer, giving a younger looking skin. They HA fillers are injected in a very specific way in order to sculpt a younger appearing face–while still maintaining the natural shape.

Step 6- Activating the extracted/ isolated PRP

This isolated platelet rich plasma is “activated” with calcium chloride to begin releasing growth factors (turning PRP to PRFM).

Step 7- Injecting PRP

The cosmetic surgeon then injects the separated and activated platelet rich plasma (PRFM) having growth factors; into the facial skin in the desired area using a very fine needle. Injections are given multiplVampire-Faciale times (a normal face would need about 20-25 injections in multiple locations in order to give an overall improvement to the area.

Once injected into the body; these growth factors then activate the multipotent stem cells (tricking them into “thinking” there’s been an injury and new tissue needs to be generated). The multipotent stem cells then develop into new collagen, new blood vessels and new tissue trying to “repair” the skin that was never injured! The result…younger-appearing skin!

Some cosmetologists use a small gun-like tool with a short needle at the end instead of manually giving injections. This works by creating small divots across the face while gently spraying the harvested plasma over top. The liquid is then gently massaged into the divots.

NOTE:  If the patient experiences swelling on the treated site then an ice pack is usually applied on the area to reduce the swelling. Some may even use a healing lamp post procedure to reduce the swelling and redness on the treated site.

FOLLOW UP- Initially 2-3 consecutive sittings are required spaced about a month apart. Then after that only a sitting once a year is required to maintain the results.

  1. Make sure that you get this Vampire Face lift procedure done only from a certified cosmetic surgeon/ cosmetologist and not from any trained paramedical staff. Also the cosmetic surgeon/ cosmetologist should have prior experience or training in PRP based face lift procedures.
  2. Ask the following questions to your cosmetologist before you go in for this procedure:
  • Are you an ideal candidate to undertake Vampire Face lift
  • Which areas the cosmetologist aims to target and to what extent you will benefit from this procedure
  • How many sittings will be required to achieve the expected results
  • Does the cosmetologist use disposable kits/ tubes and sterile conditions to extract the platelets
  • How long will the recovery take (because this differs from person to person)
  • Any specific precautions you will have to follow after the procedure (because this differs from person to person)

Q1.) How long does a vampire face lift procedure take?

ANS. The face lift procedure takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Though treatment time varies depending on the number of areas you are targeting.

Q2.) How long does the recovery take after vampire face lift procedure?

ANS. The face lift requires little recovery time. Most patients feel comfortable returning to their normal activities straight after the treatment or within a short while.

There may be extreme redness, swelling and some tenderness for first two days. Occasionally some bruising may also occur. The initial redness will subside by the 2nd day. The swelling normally diminishes by the 4th day. Some patients also notice a sand paper like texture on the skin which may persist for up to 7 to 10 days. Some patients may experience mild irritation or itching (depending on the sensitivity of an individual’s skin.

Q3.)  How long will it take to see visible results?

ANS. Within 1-2 weeks patients begin to see noticeable results. The changes continue to take place for about 3-4 weeks during which more collagen is produced, facial volume increases, skin gets plumper, the texture improves, the lines get filled up and finally a rejuvenated firmer appearing skin is revealed. These results can last between 1 to 2 years; depending on the individual.

Q4.) What extra care needs to be taken for the treated skin?

ANS. After vampire face lift skin hydration and sun protection become paramount. A daily skin care regime that includes a good quality moisturizer and multiple applications of sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher throughout the day is critical.

It is very important to follow any advice/ precautions/ product suggestion given for after care by the cosmetologist.

Q5.) How much does a vampire face lift procedure cost?

ANS. Vampire face lift procedure costs between Rs 30,000 (for just the under-eye area) to Rs 80,000 (for the whole face) per session; depending on the cosmetologist and the area to be treated.  Generally, one needs two to three sessions in order to achieve the desired results; this again varies from individual to individual.

Q6.) Who is the ideal candidate for the Vampire Face lift?

ANS. If one has lot of slack skin, droopy eyebrows, extra tissue under your eyes, lot of deep wrinkles then a surgical procedure is needed.

The best candidates for vampire face lift are those who have:

  • Some loss of volume in the cheeks
  • Puffiness under the eyes
  • Crow’s feet
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Fine lines around the mouth
  • Dull, rough, or grey skin tone and texture
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Acne scarring
  • Want to improve the quality and appearance of their skin

This procedure is not recommended for those with blood-related conditions, blood or bone cancer, platelet dysfunction syndrome, critical thrombocytopenia, hypo-fibrinogen anaemia, haemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute & chronic infections and chronic liver pathology.

Patients who take blood thinning medication or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) should discontinue their medication for a few weeks prior to their treatment and for a few days afterwards according to the doctor’s instructions.

Q7.) Is vampire face lift painful?

ANS. As a normal sized face requires somewhere around 20-25 injections which can induce little pain. If  the area under the eyes is also injected with the fluid and that particular injection is said to cause excruciating pain. Also when the plasma is massaged into the skin it is painful.

But the cosmetic surgeons apply a numbing cream which helps in preventing the pain.

Q8.) Is vampire face lift safe?

ANS. The facelift is completely safe because it utilizes an individual’s own blood.

Q9.) How is the PRP vampire face lift different from dermal fillers?

ANS. Dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid like Restylane and Juvederm are a gel that fills in lines and folds on the face. The body absorbs the product within 6 to 12 months, and a repeat treatment is then required.

PRP treatment on the other hand stimulates the body to create its own new collagen & tissue to create youthful volume and improve skin texture. This does not target individual lines and wrinkles but rather improves the overall quality of an area.

The benefits are as follows:

  • Improvement in skin texture
  • Improvement in blood flow
  • Improvement in complexion
  • Makes skin soft
  • Removes scars and spots. Developing clarity of skin
  • Skin becomes plumper, youthful, firmer
  • Removes superficial face wrinkles

  • No allergy testing required; as the blood is an individual’s own blood.
  • More affordable than conventional face lift surgery which typically costs around 1-1.5 lakhs.
  • This can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures.
  • No side effects
  • Minimal recovery time/ downtime

  • It will not add volume where there wasn’t volume earlier. It will only add volume to areas that had previously had volume.
  • Most cosmetic surgeons don’t believe in using this process.
  • The fluid gets absorbed within 24 hrs but fibrin matrix takes several weeks to build up.
  • Sometimes this procedure can affect the eye.
  • It may take around a month to show effective results
  • FDA does not approve PRP therapy for cosmetic procedures.
